June 2021 Newsletter

This looks better as an email. Sign up for our mailing list at the bottom of the page!

Did you miss us? We had a busy April and May with our first virtual Pau Hana and an event that recapped the Hawaiʻi Legislature's 2021 session, but we skipped the May newsletter because the YDHI Board took the month off to recharge. This email will recap April and May and tell you about what we have planned for June.

A Look Back

April 28: Our first YDHI virtual Pau Hana took place and drew a crowd of 30 people to play trivia. It was a fun chance to meet other members, and we are looking forward to the next one on June 23. Watch for future emails to RSVP or, better yet, go to youngdemshawaii.org to become an official member of YDHI and get an invitation to our Slack channel where we share everything we are doing!

May 4: The Legislative Committee hosted an event on the just-completed 2021 Hawaiʻi Legislature's session and how the bills we supported fared. More than 40 people attended and got a great recap from Rep. Della Au Belatti and Sen. Dru Mamo Kanuha.

May 15: The Community Impact Committee teamed up with the Kauaʻi Young Democrats to serve the community. We spent the weekend with the Kauaʻi Food Bank distributing food to residents and painting the benches at Kalena Park. Special shout out to Dr. Addison Bulosan, a candidate for Kauaʻi Council in 2022, for organizing this event and Senate President Ron Kouchi, Representative Nadine Nakamura, and Kauaʻi Councilmember Luke Evslin for spending time with us.

A Look Ahead

June 2: The YDHI Membership & Events Committee will meet at 8 PM. The Membership & Events Committee tries to spread the word about YDHI to get new members to join and to set up events to get those members to connect. Join it by emailing ydhimembershipevents@gmail.com.

June 5 and June 19: The YDHI Legislative Committee will meet at 7 PM. The Legislative Committee researches legislation, communicates with elected officials, drafts testimony on behalf of YDHI, and advances our legislative priorities. Join it by emailing ydhilegislative@gmail.com.

June 23: Save the Date! Our second YDHI virtual Pau Hana will take place in just a few weeks from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. It will be a fun, informal chance to meet other members and have a drink. Watch for future emails to RSVP or, better yet, go to youngdemshawaii.org to become an official member of YDHI and get an invitation to our Slack channel where we share everything we are doing!

June 29: The YDHI Community Impact Committee will meet at 7 PM. The Community Impact Committee is dedicated to volunteering with organizations serving various communities across the state, hosting voter registration drives, and participating in local events for outreach. Join it by emailing ydhicommunityimpact@gmail.com.
