Young Democrats of Hawaiʻi (YDHI) is proud to congratulate the 15 young Democrats who won primary election races across the State of Hawaiʻi. We also extend our congratulations to all who ran and played a crucial role in our electoral process.
Young candidates up and down the ballot brought fresh thinking on key issues and rallied young voters to turn out in force. A record-setting 51.1 percent of Hawaiʻi's registered voters made their voice heard this year, compared to a dismal 38.6 percent turnout in 2018. The last time Hawaiʻi saw a similar turnout rate was in 1998, more than 20 years ago.
This good news is especially welcome as we face an alarming convergence of socioeconomic challenges. Now more than ever, we need the vision, mindset, and grit of our emerging young Democrats. This, coupled with an activated young voter bloc, is something we can rest our hope in.
