January was a big month in national and Hawaiʻi politics. Take a look at the highlights and ways for you to get involved in February!
A Look Back at January
January 5: Georgia elects two Democrats to the Senate, giving Democrats complete control in Washington, DC. YDHI made calls to Georgia voters in December to help turn the Senate blue!
January 18: YDHI President Trish La Chica had her first meeting with the Young Democrats of America's Biden-Harris Task Force, which met with Biden’s transition team. Trish was one of 15 selected for the prestigious task force and will be able to represent Hawaiʻi on issues that matter to us.
January 20: President Biden and Vice President Harris are sworn in. YDHI campaigned on their behalf by calling voters in swing states in October. January 20: The Hawaiʻi State Legislature opened its 2021 session, which will run until May. YDHI will be tracking bills that matter most to us and will provide members many chances to engage with legislators and testify throughout the session.
A Look Ahead to February
February 13 and 27: The YDHI Legislative Committee will meet at 7 PM. The Legislative Committee researches legislation, communicates with elected officials, drafts testimony on behalf of YDHI, and advances our legislative priorities. February 23: The YDHI Community Impact Committee will meet at 7 PM. The Community Impact Committee is dedicated to volunteering with organizations serving various communities across the state, hosting voter registration drives, and participating in local events for outreach. February 24: The YDHI Outreach and Social Committee will meet at 7 PM. The Outreach and Social Committee tries to spread the word about YDHI to get new members to join and to set up events to get those members to connect. Join it by emailing Kat Kelly at kathrynmgkelly@gmail.com.
